Could you be a match? July 12, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Malia Yoshioka @ 9:41 am

This urgent request came from a friend of a friend here in Honolulu – please help spread the word and contact them if you know of anyone with the right nationality who is willing to be tested!

A very special friend of mine who is a young mother of three needs our help quickly. She needs a bone marrow transplant ideally from someone who is 50% Japanese/50% Chinese. Her name is Barbie Ho (her husband is Keahi Tucker) and she has an agressive form of Leukemia. Please forward this email to as many people as possible, especially if they are the right nationality. If you are willing to be tested please contact Kinau at 808-753-2374 or, Barbie and Keahi will pay for the blood test and any medical expenses. It’s just a blood test and then if it is a match it is a simple process (not a hospital stay).

UPDATE: There will be a bone marrow drive tomorrow (7/13). 7:30am to 3:30pm @ Starbucks Ward Ave. Testing is as easy as swiping a cotton swab inside your mouth. Please spread the word.

Just passed the $1,000 mark! July 8, 2011

To date, we’ve raised $1,050 for the Leukemia Society – I can’t thank you enough for your support! The half marathon is just a little over 3 months away and the training runs are starting to get longer. Tomorrow morning I’ll be meeting the team at 6:30am out in Hawaii Kai for another group session. We have a lot of new members on our team this year and it’s inspiring to hear their stories and reasons for getting behind this cause.

If you’d like to help, please feel free to make a donation online at or visit the Current and Upcoming Fundraisers link at the top of the page for ways you can help, including signing up to help at a running event, turning in your loose change at a Coinstar machine, or purchasing Macy’s Shop For a Cause tickets! Thanks for the encouragement! =)

Volunteer Your Time July 5, 2011

If you can’t afford to give a monetary donation this year, but would still like to help, we need volunteers for many of the aid stations for the Honolulu Marathon Race Readiness Series. If you are able to help with any of these (and/or have friends or family members that can join you) your time is worth $10 per hour worked as a donation to the Leukemia Society!

Here are the races, dates and times that we need volunteers:

  • Sun, August 14, 5am to 8am – ING Direct Norman Tamanaha 15K – in Honolulu
  • Sun, September 4, 5am to 9am – Runner’s HI 20K – in Kapolei
  • Sun, October 2, 4:30am to 9:30am – ING Direct 25K – in Kailua
  • Sun, October 23, 4am to 9:30am – PF Chang’s 30K – in Honolulu
  • November 6, 4:30am to 9am – Val Nolasco Half Marathon – in Honolulu

Working at an aid station is actually a really exciting way to participate in these races. You’ll help pass out water and sports drink to runners passing by and help cheer them on! You also receive a t-shirt in exchange for your time. Please let me know if you’d like to help!

Macy’s Shop for a Cause – August 27th July 3, 2011

Want to help raise $ for the Leukemia Society and get a little something for yourself in return? For a $5 donation, I’m selling tickets for this year’s Macy’s Shop for a Cause event which takes place on Saturday, August 27th. (This is good for Macy’s stores nationwide, not just Hawaii!)

For your $5 donation, you get 25% off on regular, sale and clearance merchandise throughout the store, even on brands that are usually excluded from sales. (The exception is 10% off on electronics, furniture, matresses, and rug/floor coverings.) And, you will also be eligible to win a $500 gift card, no purchase necessary!

If you would like to purchase a ticket, please email me at and let me know where to send it or how to get it to you. You can mail me a check and I can send you the tickets right away! If you have friends, family, or coworkers who would like a ticket please let me know how many to send.
