Honolulu Marathon 2009 December 16, 2009

Just wanted to sent out a huge THANK YOU to all who donated and for all of your support throughout the fundraising season this year! This weekend, I finished the Honolulu Marathon with a time of 5:37!! All the hard work paid off because I beat my previous PR of 6:45 by over an hour! You can see some of the pictures by clicking here.

I had told myself before the race that my “secret” goal was to break six hours, and I’m still pretty blown away that we came so close to five and a half! My knee held up fine until the 35k mark (about mile 22ish) and we had to walk most of the last 4, but we were able to pick up and run in to the finish line with big smiles on our faces! It’s a big change from 2007 when I had to walk the last 20!

This year’s Nike Women’s Marathon raised millions of dollars for the Leukemia Society, and the Honolulu Marathon brought in over $760,000! Thanks to your generous support, I came SO CLOSE to my personal goal of $4,000. I raised about $3800 for the Leukemia Society by running in these two events. (I had fundraising pages for both events and this one needed to get to $1970 in order to make $4,000 total (it’s still not too late if you want to make a donation!) – I know that times are hard this year, so it means even more that so many people were able to chip in for a good cause.

The battle isn’t over yet! My friend John is still fighting his second round with Leukemia and continues to inspire me to treasure life to the fullest and to live with a fighting spirit! It really helped when I was in the last miles of the marathon… If you’d like to lend your support or to get updates, please join his facebook group (appropriately titled “John Kark is going to kick cancer’s ass!”) here.

And for those of you thinking, “hey maybe I could do that too?” Find more information about Team in Training at If I can do it, anyone can!

I won’t lie, I’m definitely looking forward to getting to sleep in this weekend – I’ve been getting up so early for training runs since May that I practically forget what it feels like to sleep in for a change! But it has definitely been worth it. Thank you so much for coming along on this journey!

Mahalo nui loa,
Malia Yoshioka =)
